Overview

Delivered during the District 3 General Assembly, the presentation explores how nurses can move beyond burnout, complaints, and institutional frustration—and instead, step into intentional leadershippolicy advocacy, and legacy building.

Dr. Evette Wilson challenges nurses to examine their own roles in shaping the profession’s future and encourages them to claim their seat at the decision-making table. Through storytelling, real talk, and motivational guidance, attendees are empowered to shift from passive engagement to active professional influence.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the roles of leadership, advocacy, and legacy within the context of nursing practice.
  2. Differentiate between passive engagement and active leadership in professional nursing.
  3. Identify three ways to become involved in local or statewide nursing advocacy efforts.
  4. Evaluate how their personal and professional choices contribute to the broader legacy of the nursing profession.
  5. Commit to one concrete action that supports leadership development or professional advocacy.

Topics Covered:

  • The myth of leadership as a title vs. the truth of leadership as a mindset
  • The nurse's voice in policy, community health, and organizational decision-making
  • Breaking the cycle of blame: moving from complaint to contribution
  • Creating sustainable legacy through mentorship, advocacy, and representation
